Gerard Hogan, DNSc., CRNA, FAANA

Gerard (Jerry) Hogan is a doctoral candidate in Nursing Science at Florida State University, specializing in nurse anesthesia education and student resilience. He began his nursing career after earning a Bachelor of Science in Nursing from the University of Florida College of Nursing, then earning his Master of Science in Nursing at the University of North Carolina at Greensboro, and then a Doctor of Nursing Science Degree at the University of Tennessee.  He has built an extensive clinical and educational background in anesthesia care and CRNA training. He is a retired USAF Lieutenant Colonel having completed two tours in Afghanistan and retiring in 2014. He is currently faculty in the College of Applied Studies at FSU in the Nurse Anesthesia program.

Professionally, Gerard has contributed to nurse anesthesia program development and DNAP education, mentoring students as they design evidence-based scholarly projects and develop skills in PICOT formulation and evaluation of pre/post-intervention data. His current doctoral work focuses on resilience, coping, and help‑seeking among nurse anesthesia students within 36‑month doctoral programs, extending prior work on burnout, stress, and resilience in master’s‑level nurse anesthesia education.

Research interests

Jerry’s research centers on stress, burnout, and resilience among advanced practice nursing students, with a particular focus on Student Registered Nurse Anesthetists (SRNAs) navigating high‑stakes, doctoral‑level training. He is especially interested in how resilience and critical hope can be fostered within nurse anesthesia programs to support coping, help‑seeking, and academic success in demanding clinical learning environments.

Methodologically, his work emphasizes quantitative, survey‑based approaches to resilience and stress using validated measures such as the CD‑RISC‑10 and PSS‑10, paired with rigorous power analysis and large national samples of SRNAs. Broader interests include evidence‑based curriculum and program design for nurse anesthesia, resilience‑oriented educational interventions, and the translation of resilience and critical hope frameworks into graduate nursing education policy and practice.

Steering Committee

Gerard's steering committee chair is is Dr. Henna Budhwani who holds the endowed Michael and Paula Read Phelan Professorship in Obstetrical Nursing and is a faculty member in the Institute of Digital Health and Innovation. His steering committee members are Dr. Karen MacDonnell (College of Medicine), Dr. Steven Palazzo (College of Nursing), and Dr. James Whyte (College of Nursing).
